LUCKLESS West Coast midfielder Matt Rosa is expected to miss the first six rounds of the season after having surgery on his thigh on Tuesday.
Rosa adds to a long list of key players who will be unavailable for the Round 1 Western Derby for the Eagles.
Ruckman Nic Naitanui (groin), midfielders Daniel Kerr (knee) and Sharrod Wellingham (ankle) and forward Mark Nicoski (hamstring) have also been ruled out.
West Coast coach John Worsfold said Rosa was injured in the NAB Cup loss to Port Adelaide in Alica Springs last Saturday.
"Matt Rosa pulled up sore after the Port Adelaide game, our medical staff assessed him and unfortunately he has compartment syndrome which required surgery," Worsfold said.
Rosa won the Ross Glendinning Medal for best afield in the first derby of 2012, torching Fremantle on his way to a career-high 43 disposals in Round 9.
The midfielder played 18 of a possible 24 games last season, averaging a tick over 23 touches per outing.
Andrew Embley is expected to be available for next weekend's derby after suffering a minor hamstring strain in the second round of the NAB Cup.
