SHORT of a full gallop due to the wild weather that has engulfed Brisbane, the Lions took to Doomben racecourse today to prepare for this Saturday night's pre-season showdown with Collingwood.
Brisbane takes on the Magpies at Ethiad Stadium with the winner in the box seat to play in the NAB Cup final.
Regular pre-season training venue Coorparoo is water-logged and the Gabba is unavailable due to cricket season so the club organised a session on the plush Doomben polo fields inside the main racetrack once graced by Black Caviar.
Lions defender Joel Patfull said it was vital Brisbane got a decent run under its belt ahead of the match-up against the Pies.
"It's a bit different, we are running out of ovals to train on at the moment so it's good to get out here and on a dry track and get a good session in ... it was one of the last resorts,'' he said after a searching two-hour fitness and ballwork session.
"It's a dress rehearsal for Round 1. We are playing at a venue at which we play Round 1 (against the Bulldogs on March 30), we get to play against good opposition.
"There's probably no better preparation ... It will be a good experience for everyone involved (but) we've got a lot of young kids.
"We finished off the (2012) season pretty well and we've started pretty positively this year as well so if we can getting those wins and getting that momentum through to Round 1, it's definitely going to help us.''
The Lions will be close to full strength with reigning best-and-fairest winner Patfull, co-captain Jonathan Brown, Daniel Rich, Daniel Merrett, Andrew Raines and Ash McGarth all likely to be added to the side that beat GWS by three points in Wagga Wagga last weekend.
In-form forward Aaron Cornelius did not complete the full session yesterday due to a rolled ankle on the weekend but is expected to play.
Brisbane will train in Melbourne on Friday to finalise preparations.
