HAWTHORN has been dealt a blow with superboot Matthew Suckling suffering what appears to be a serious knee injury.

The Hawks will be sweating on scans on Suckling's right leg after his knee collapsed during the second quarter of today's one-point loss to Richmond.

Suckling was trying to change direction when his leg gave way on the wing.

Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson said it was likely Suckling had ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament.

The classy backman hobbled off the ground before being helped into the rooms.

Suckling emerged on the interchange bench during the third quarter with ice on his knee and crutches by his side.

Meanwhile, Brendan Whitecross, rehabbing from a full knee reconstruction, told Fox Footy he was just ahead of schedule in his recovery.

Whitecross went down in Hawthorn's qualifying final win over Collingwood last year.
