Jai Bednall’s AFL Team of the Week

IT'S the first nine-game round since we've been naming a Team of the Week, so competition for spots was a lot more fierce.

A number of players — including Brendon Goddard, Lachie Whitfield and Tom Liberatore — went unrewarded despite big games.

And then there was Fremantle tagger Ryan Crowley, who kept Ryan Griffen to a measly 10 disposals while also having 17 and a goal himself but couldn't squeeze on to our bench.

The lesson, as always — don't expect love from anyone outside your own club if you're a tagger.

DEFENCE

Neville Jetta (Melbourne)

Jetta well and truly stitched up Chad Wingard before the Port gamebreaker left the field with concussion. His list of scalps is growing by the week.

Michael Johnson (Fremantle)

Just edged North's Scott Thompson for this spot. Johnson continues to lead the race for the All-Australian full-back position.

Dustin Fletcher (Essendon)

The veteran had 25 disposals, 13 marks, a goal and a game-high 10 one percenters against the Tigers.

Nick Malceski (Sydney)

Malceski had more of the ball than anyone in the Swans' demolition of the Cats.

Daniel Talia (Adelaide)

Gold Coast forward Tom Lynch had kicked 15 goals in the four weeks leading into the Adelaide game. He didn't trouble the scorers in his match-up with Talia.

David Swallow (Gold Coast)

His team didn't win but Swallow was given maximum votes by Guy McKenna and Brenton Sanderson for his 37 disposals, two-goal effort.

MIDFIELD

Stephen Hill (Fremantle)

It was the finishing of Hill (four goals) which allowed the Dockers to a post a 38-point win despite having 26 fewer inside 50s than the Dogs.

Ben Cunnington (North Melbourne)

Got better and better as the game went on against the Eagles and finished with a game-high eight clearances.

Isaac Smith (Hawthorn)

Did more than anyone to ensure the Hawks avoided what would have been an embarrassing loss to the Giants. Finished with four goals.

ATTACK

Ben Howlett (Essendon)

Howlett's five- goal explosion against Richmond was a career best and the first time he'd kicked multiple goals in a game since Round 2 last year.

Taylor Walker (Adelaide)

Welcome back, Tex. After spraying his first shot at goal, the big Crow was far more accurate and finished with five.

Devon Smith (GWS)

Smith doesn't mind a goal and managed to kick five against St Kilda earlier this season and three against Port. But his 26 disposal, 10 tackle, four-goal effort against the Hawks was his best game of the year.

Kurt Tippett (Sydney)

The Swans took the ball inside 50 a staggering 75 times against the Cats and Tippett took advantage, kicking 5.3.

Travis Cloke (Collingwood)

It was a good week for some of our favourite key forwards, including Cloke who had 23 disposals and five goals against the Saints.

Josh Thomas (Collingwood)

Thomas broke his goal drought by kicking three against St Kilda in a display which showed his ability in the air and at ground level.

FIRST RUCK

Robbie Warnock (Carlton)

Trent West's injury certainly didn't hurt, but Warnock's 57 hit outs against Brisbane deserve recognition.

Travis Boak (Port Adelaide)

Played with a grapefruit-sized ankle and still wouldn't be denied against the Demons. What a gun.

Tom Rockliff (Brisbane)

Single-handedly cost me a SuperCoach victory this week with his 36 disposal, 13 tackle game against the Blues.

INTERCHANGE

Nick Dal Santo (North Melbourne)

Climbing the 'Recruit of the Year' rankings after a slow start to the season. Is averaging 28 disposals a game.

Dayne Beams (Collingwood)

Another 33 disposal, one-goal effort for Beams, whose consistency has been superb this season.

Dom Tyson (Melbourne)

Hearing less and less noise about the Dees' decision to give up pick two in the draft for this kid. Was Melbourne's best against Port.

Josh Kennedy (Sydney)

Emerging as the other genuine threat (alongside Scott Pendlebury) to challenge Gary Ablett for the Brownlow.
