IT WAS the quarter that went on. And on. And on.
A long injury delay resulted in an unprecedented 92-minute term in the Victorian Amateur Football Association division one match on Saturday between Old Mentionans and Williamstown CYMS.
The umpires stopped the time clock when Old Mentonians co-captain Gareth Snow went down hurt and an ambulance was called to the Mentone Grammar Playing Fields to take Snow to hospital.
He had leapt to spoil but landed awkwardly, leaving him writhing in pain and holding his knee.
There was 4min 30sec left in the game and the umpires decided to try to play on despite the gloom of night engulfing the ground.
Both teams agreed it was not safe to move the injured player so he lay in the forward pocket for 35 minutes waiting for an ambulance, then a further 15 minutes for paramedics to treat him.
Amazingly, the CYs led by 12 points when the break came but they then gave up four scoring shots to allow the Panthers to snatch a win that will be remembered for a long time.
