THE irony that is Essendon shows a club in arguably its darkest hour boasting a team list that can take it to sustained success.
That is the view of Mark McVeigh, someone who played the last of his 232 games in 2012 and who played in the Bombers' last great era of 1999-2001 when they won one Premiership from two Grand Finals.
He believes the team that takes on Fremantle tonight at Patersons Stadium boast the games experience and sits in the right age bracket for a crack at the flag, if not this year then certainly over the next five seasons.
"The guys have been phenomenal and I'm very proud what this group has done so far this year. I have great faith in what they are doing,'' said McVeigh.
"I can assure you they wouldn't be entertaining the thought of not making the finals. That was our thinking last year and the list has improved since then.
"They have an 'anytime, anywhere' attitude that will hopefully be seen tonight. And the strength of their list is they have like-for-like players ready to come in.
"You will see Jason Winderlich play a real role because he is just so important with his delivery inside 50m.''

When speaking of like-for-like, McVeigh is referring to David Hille being capable of replacing ruckmen Tom Bellchambers and Paddy Ryder, Tayte Pears for Jake Carlisle, Scott Gumbleton or Joe Daniher for Michael Hurley and Stewart Crameri.
Daniher, who booted six goals in the VFL last weekend, is a real prospect according to a former club champion in Scott Lucas.
"I know they don't want to rush him but Joe Daniher could play senior football this year and play well. He is a very impressive young player,'' said Lucas.
"The beauty is they don't have to rush him with Hurley and Crameri playing well up forward. They let Jake Carlisle develop and he is showing great signs as a young player.''
Essendon's age bracket when looking at their top-30 rated players has just three 30-plus (Dustin Fletcher, David Hille and Nathan Lovett-Murray) 20 between 23-29 and the youngsters such as Dyson Heppell, Jake Melksham, Travis Colyer, Hurley, Daniher and Carlisle.
It is the result of very smart recruiting says Andrew Welsh who retired at the end of 2011 after 162 games.
"Even though the club has had some lean years in recent times, nobody has wanted to leave which tells you they know the good times aren't far away,'' said Welsh.
"One of their problems has been showing a killer instinct to really finish off teams and that was taken care of against Melbourne.
"I firmly believe the next five years are going to be a very exciting time for the Essendon Football Club."
