COLLINGWOOD forward Chris Dawes will request a trade to Melbourne.
Four clubs have bid for Dawes' services since he announced he wanted to seek opportunities elsewhere.
But the Demons have won the bidding war, narrowly edging out the Western Bulldogs.
Carlton was an early contender and the Brisbane Lions made a late pitch for Dawes, but his manager Ben Niall said the 24-year-old did not want to leave Victoria.
He said developing himself as a leader was a key to Dawes' decision after he realised there wasn't much "room to grow" at Collingwood - where he still has two years to run on a contract.
The Demons will now have to come up with a trade deal to satisfy the Magpies - and Collingwood football manager Geoff Walsh said late today it is "certainly not a done deal".
"He has a contract so he doesn't have to go anywhere, and at the end of the day we're not going to kick him out the door," Walsh said.
Walsh said the Pies would not do a deal simply to satisfy Melbourne's desired "transaction".
He also hinted it would take a top pick to pry Dawes away.
"I think (recruiting boss) Derek Hine is pretty keen to get a couple of picks in the first round."
Niall said pick 20, which the Dees acquired in a trade with GWS on Tuesday, should satisfy Collingwood's demands.
"I would've thought a late first-rounder would be about right," he said.
"I'm pretty confident (in the deal eventuating), we've done a fair bit of work.
"I've been talking to Collingwood throughout the process and I'm pretty confident they'll get a deal done pretty quickly.
"They've been good to us and I think there's a pretty good understanding of what it'll take to get it done."
Every deal, every whisper at Department of Trades
Niall told the AFL website's trade radio that Dawes' existing relationship with Melbourne coach Mark Neeld played a role in the power forward nominating the Dees.
Neeld was an assistant to Mick Malthouse in Collingwood's 2010 premiership, which Dawes played in.
"If you go somewhere where you know your boss a bit better obviously you feel more comfortable," Niall said.
If the Dees hand Collingwood pick 20, Pies recruiting guru Derek Hine could head to the November draft with picks 17, 18 and 20 at his disposal.

Niall said Dawes' girlfriend is studying a commerce degree in Melbourne and he did not want to move interstate.
"The second thing was obviously looking at different opportunities and whether he wants to go to a club that is in contention again, where he would be a role player, or go to a club and help create a culture and be a leader.
"He came into Collingwood which already had a terrific culture in place, now he can go into a club and be responsible for building a culture and standards, that really appealed to Chris."

Melbourne has already traded pick three for 17-year-old Jesse Hogan, pick 13 in the same deal and used pick 26 on father-son selection Jack Viney. The Dees have pick four in November's draft.
This morning the Demons opted not to match Brisbane's offer for free agent Brent Moloney.
The Dees could also lose free agent Jared Rivers but have picked up former Cat Shannon Byrnes in an active trade period for the 16th-placed club.
It seems Collingwood will lose Dawes and Sharrod Wellingham - already traded to West Coast - from their star-studded list. The Pies have recruited former Eagle Quinten Lynch.
Meanwhile, Walsh also confirmed Collingwood's interest in Hawthorn line-breaker Clinton Young.
He said Young was "a very attractive" player due to his ball-carrying ability, but there had been no progress on a deal with the unrestricted free agent.
